8 Kitchen Trends That Will Be Big in 2024

Trends, trends, trends. You’ve seen just about every blogger and online magazine talk about them. But what makes them so important?

Simply, trends help shape the future of interior design. They help predict what might be sought after in the future, guiding designers, architects, and furniture manufacturers into a new direction.

Today, I am sharing the top kitchen trends that will be big in 2024 based on research and feedback from our customers. Let’s dive in!

First: Trust Your Instincts

I would like to preface this article by stating that you are not obligated to chase after the latest trends. Remember to trust your instincts and appreciate your own taste.

1. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials

As concerns about climate change and resource depletion grow, more people are seeking ways to minimize their ecological footprint.

“The vast majority of homeowners (92%) incorporate sustainable features during a kitchen renovation. While the most frequently cited reason for incorporating sustainable options is long-run cost-effectiveness (74%), making environmentally friendly choices is also top of mind for 3 in 5 renovating homeowners (54%).”

Examples of Eco-Friendly Materials and Options

Some examples of eco-friendly materials include LED bulbs, energy-efficient appliances, water-efficient fixtures, energy-efficient windows, bamboo flooring and cabinetry, recycled glass for countertops, reclaimed wood, and cork.

Tips for Incorporating Sustainable Materials
  • Start Small: If a full kitchen remodel isn’t feasible, consider smaller updates like replacing cabinet fronts with bamboo or adding a recycled glass backsplash.
  • Choose Energy-Efficient Appliances: Look for appliances with high energy efficiency ratings to reduce both your carbon footprint and electricity bills.
  • Use Reclaimed Wood: Consider reclaimed wood for flooring, countertops, or as an accent feature on an island or walls.
  • Opt for Non-Toxic Finishes: Select paints, stains, and sealants that are low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) to maintain better air quality in your home.

2. Curves

We are seeing a huge surge in chairs and bar stools with curves, whether it’s around the back, the seat, or the legs.

Curved cushions and footrests help soften the space. Featuring the Tully bar stools.

I believe it has to do with the fact that curves convey a soft look to the space. They invite you, and encourage you to relax.

And with the fact that most kitchen cabinets and kitchen islands have straight lines, curves create that contrast.

3. Two-Side Seating

We’re starting to see a push towards two-side seating, sometimes called wraparound seating, and what I mean by this is: bar stools that face each other at the kitchen island.

It’s interesting to see that all four people (on the right photo) will face each other when seated. Doing this eliminates the need for a dining table.

4. Multifunctional Kitchens

As homes become more centered around multifunctional spaces, kitchen islands have grown to accommodate a variety of activities beyond cooking.

Larger islands can serve as a space for dining, working from home, homework, and casual socializing.

“56% of respondents have plans to add a kitchen island or maximize the size of an existing one in future projects.”

How to Integrate Workstations and Multipurpose Islands
  • Built-In Outlets and Tech Stations: Equip your island with built-in power outlets and USB ports to support laptops, tablets, and other tech devices.
  • Backless Seating: Choose comfortable backless bar stools or low back bar stools that can be tucked away under the island when not in use. This makes it easier to switch between dining, socializing, and working.
  • Integrated Storage Solutions: Design your island with integrated storage for office supplies and kitchen tools, perfect for a kitchen office setup. Hidden compartments or sliding shelves can store away papers, printers, or tech gadgets when they are not needed.
  • Lighting Options: Install adjustable lighting above the island. Bright task lighting can facilitate cooking or working, while softer lighting can create a relaxing atmosphere for socializing.

5. Mixed Metals and Textures

When you combine sleek metal against the rustic charm of ribbed wood, you instantly add visual interest and pizazz to your space.

“Predicted to boom in 2024, slatted and ribbed wood is a way to make your space feel super refined and chic, and it’s especially ideal if you love entertaining at home.”

House Beautiful

I love the texture and look of ribbed cabinets; they offer a subtle yet effective way to incorporate elements of nature into your kitchen, embodying a touch of biophilic design which is a popular design look.

Other Material & Texture Combinations

Matte and Glossy Finishes: Combining matte and glossy finishes can create a subtle yet striking contrast.

For instance, matte cabinetry paired with a glossy backsplash or countertops reflects light differently, adding layers of visual interest.

This combination can also help in defining different areas or functions within the kitchen.

Metal Accents: Introducing different metals, such as brass, copper, stainless steel, or blackened steel, as accents in fixtures, hardware, or lighting, can enhance the kitchen’s aesthetic appeal.

Mixing metals adds a touch of elegance and can warm up or cool down the kitchen’s color scheme depending on the tones chosen.

Textured Surfaces: Textures play a crucial role in adding depth and tactile elements to the kitchen. This can be achieved through materials like rough-hewn wood, hammered metals, or embossed concrete.

Textured tiles for the backsplash or textured laminate for cabinets are also effective ways to introduce complexity and interest.

6. Earth Tone Colors

Earth. Tone. Colors. They are not going anywhere this year!

These colors have a way of bringing the outside in, creating a sanctuary that’s both grounding and invigorating. The color of your furniture can play a crucial role in this transformation, enhancing the natural vibe and reducing stress.

Psychology of Earth Tone Colors

Each earth tone color conveys a different meaning. Green, brown, and burnt orange are among the key hues in this palette. The meanings associated with these colors are as follows:

  • Green symbolizes harmony, tranquility, and happiness.
  • Brown conveys coziness, strength, and protection.
  • Burnt Orange represents enthusiasm, enjoyment, and prosperity.

6B. Green

With that said, green is another popular hue making waves in 2024.

And not just any green, but a lush, vibrant hue that’s everywhere.

From sage to forest, mint to emerald, each shade of green brings its own slice of the natural world into your home.

Colors and statement seating are in for 2024 and we wouldn’t be happier! We are big fans of color, whether it’s coastal blues, earthy greens, vibrant yellows, and more.

This trend marks a departure from the classic white kitchen, injecting personality and energy into the heart of the home.

“People want to make a statement now. Of all the trends coming this year, I think that bold colors are the thing that is going to have the most staying power.”

Popular Colors for 2024

The color trends for 2024 are all about depth and vibrancy, with a few standout hues:

  • Deep Blues: Think of the midnight sky or the ocean’s depths, offering a sense of calm and sophistication.
  • Earthy Greens: Rich and grounding, these shades bring the outside in, promoting a feel of nature and renewal.
  • Vibrant Yellows: Sunny and cheerful, they infuse kitchens with optimism and brightness.
  • Bold Reds: A dash of passion and warmth, perfect for creating focal points.

To weave in additional layers of richness:

  • Plum: This luxurious, deep purple adds a touch of regal elegance and can work beautifully as an accent or a bold statement.
  • Wine: Evocative of the velvety depth of a fine red wine, this color brings sophistication and a hint of indulgence to the palette.
  • Indigo: A color that straddles the line between blue and violet, indigo brings a sense of mystique and contemplation, rounding out the color trends with its introspective beauty.

Psychological Effects of Color in the Kitchen

Colors significantly affect mood and behavior:

  • Blues are known to create a serene and calming atmosphere, which can be beneficial in the bustling environment of a kitchen.
  • Greens are associated with health and vitality, encouraging a connection with nature and fresh ingredients.
  • Yellows can stimulate appetite and bring about a sense of happiness and energy.
  • Reds are said to evoke hunger but also can raise energy levels, ideal for a space where family and friends gather.

7B: Gold

And now, for the pièce de résistance of kitchen trends: GOLD.

Oh yes, gold isn’t just in; it’s claimed its throne and isn’t planning to vacate anytime soon

This timeless metal has a way of injecting a dose of luxury and warmth into ANY space it graces.

We’re not just talking about subtle hints here and there; gold is making its presence known in fixtures, seating [like bar stools!] hardware, and even statement lighting.

It’s all about bringing a warm, inviting glow!

So, if you’re looking to add that WOW factor to your kitchen, sprinkle a little gold dust around.

8. Personalized and Customized Spaces

Think of the kitchen as the heart of your home. It’s where you cook, maybe eat, and often hang out. So, it makes sense to design it in a way that fits your specific lifestyle.

For example, if you love to cook, you might want extra counter space for prepping. Or, if you often host dinner parties, a big kitchen island with lots of seating could be perfect. It’s all about what makes life smoother and more pleasant for you.
